Method
Cook Pasta
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Make Cheese Sauce
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until golden.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and bubbles.
- Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar and monterey jack cheeses until melted and smooth. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Combine and Bake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta and cheese sauce, mixing well.
- Transfer the mixture to a baking dish.
- In a small bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, and olive oil. Sprinkle over the mac and cheese.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden and crispy.
